Very good full leather binding, "M'Gready's Sermons" in gilt on a red leather spine label, 5 1/2 x 8 1/2, recent former owner's signature on front paste-down, the two front fly leaves loosely attached. xv., 511 pp., first leaf of "Sketch of the Character..." chipped in the margins with loss of a few letters of text; pages vary in darkness and foxing, tight. Good.

Roberts, Revival Literature no. 3455. "This pioneer preacher and revivalist was born in Western Pennsylvania but spent the greater part of his youth in North Carolina. Having studied theology under John McMillan in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, McGready was licensed to preach by the Presbytery of Redstone. His revival spirit was kindled at Hampden-Sydney College. Remarkable revivals occurred under his ministry, most noted of which was in Logan County, Kentucky in 1797, 1798, and 1799. These revivals were the forerunners of the great Kentucky revival of 1800."

These sermons are Biblical, unsparing, and direct and are perhaps the ultimate example of the preaching of the Cane Ridge Revival in Kentucky .There are 42 sermons plus a lecture on Intemperance. Begins with "Some account of the Revival of 1800." Sermon XL is "Vindication of the Exercises in the Revival of 1800."

No copies on the market at any price and the first time I've handled the complete work in perhaps the last 10 years.
