Details: This ring is a spectacular example of a Victorian mourning ring with impeccable floral repoussé work bordered above and below with a line of black enamel. On the inside of the band reads the inscription, “Rt Hon.ble Sir Thos Plummer ob. 25 march 1824 ag 71”.
Mourning jewelry was especially popular during the Georgian and Victorian eras. Considered a celebration of life and remembrance, money was set aside in the deceased's will for pieces of jewelry to be fabricated in their honor and distributed as remembrance pieces to loved ones. The receivers wore the jewelry - typically done with black detailing and/or dark stones alongside all black attire during a set mourning period.
We love this custom of honoring the deceased and the heartbreakingly beautiful craftsmanship of these poignant and collectable pieces.
Measurements: The ring size is 9 1/4. The total weight is 7.9g. The band is 10mm wide.
Origin: England, c. 1824.
