I purchased this some time ago because I just couldn't get over the quantity of period appropriate high quality content. It depicts a bustling riverside Native American encampment nestled in the mountains in the background, a small group around a campfire, what looks to be a pair of bald eagles in the sky, teepees, etc. It really has it all.
If I were guessing, I would say painted either in Pennsylvania or New York. The treatment of foliage and landscape is reminiscent of Jasper Francis Crospey and other representatives of the Hudson River School.
The bad news? Well, I bought it intending to have it restored . . . it is in desperate need. The paint itself is in good condition under some yellowed varnish, but there are multiple tears to the canvas as shown that will require repair and blending. I just never got around to it. We're going to be moving, and it's time for someone else to take a swing at bringing it back to its original glory.
18 x 36 inches. Illegibly signed at the lower right. Restored in a period frame, I have no problem seeing this work in an Americana gallery at $10-$20k.
