A very handsome volume containing the entire 12 issues of The Scots Magazine for 1782, the entirety of the content dominated by the American Revolution, offering a fascinating British-loyalist and British self-critical perspective on the closing stages of the American conflict.
Significant content related to the Surrender at Yorktown. While Cornwallis surrendered in late 1781, the full parliamentary debates, official dispatches, and public fallout regarding what came to be known as the "American catastrophe" permeated the early 1782 issues. The financial fall-out continues to be a point of discussion straight through to the end of the year.
The January and February issues feature detailed reports on the Action of 15 January 1782, a naval battle near Jamaica where the HMS Fox captured Spanish merchantmen.
Excellent material from the peak of the Great Siege of Gibraltar. The magazine provided monthly updates on the "Floating Batteries" and the eventual British defense against the French and Spanish forces.
And a rather detailed multi-month accounting of the resignation of Lord North. The March and April issues contain the dramatic parliamentary proceedings leading to the collapse of Lord North’s ministry, marking the effective end of British efforts to subdue the American colonies.
Further contents include: Extensive letter by Lord Stirling to General Heath and transmitted to the Congress of America regarding ongoing hostilities in the "Mohawk District" Johnstown, Bucks Island, Offwagawehu, Oneida Creek, etc.; Generals Greene and Hayter issue an edict for a general pardon to all those who took the oath of allegiance during Lord Cornwallis's march to Virginia; an extensive letter by Fabricius [i.e. Joseph Galloway] criticizing the British military's actions in America; Of the Effects of Volcanos and of the Hot Springs in Iceland; The Qualities and Properties of Honey with Respect to Food and Medicine; A Second Fabricius Leter on the Misconduct of the British Military in America; On Appearances, Causes, and Prognostics of the Weather; Madness - A Poem; The Humble and Duful Declaration and Address of His Majesty's American Loyalists [fascinating extensive open letter from American Loyalists to King George on the tyrannical rule of the Congressional rebels, etc.]; Account of Parliament on the Justness of the American War [extensive]; History of Gardening; Extensive Review of Griffith's Essays to Young Married Women; Parliamentary Report and Debate on the Expenses of the War; Review of The Female Kidnappers; Or, The Rape of the Infant; Resolutions of a Female Parliament; America and the West Indies; Extract of an Act for Preventing the Slaughter of Cattle in Edinburgh; Some Account of the Manners of the Inhabitants of Connecticut; On the Literary Education of Women; The Cruelty of Americans to British Prisoners; Letters between the Commanders in chief at New York and General George Washington relating to Captain Huddy; Laws Enacted by the Assembly of South Carolina; Trial of David Tyrie for High Treason [Hanged]; Remarkable Story of a Bitch; Journal of the Captain of a Greenland Ship Lost in the Ice; On Raising a Scots Militia; On Breeding Calves without Milk; Further Letters between General George Washington, Carlteon, and Digby; Dr. Zimmerman on the Effects of Tea Drinking; On the Prohibition against Wearing a Highland Dress [repealing the ban on kilts, in effect since 1746]; On the Bill for Preventing the Growth of Tobacco in Britain; The War with America - A Truce Proposed in South Carolina; Savanah Evacuated; Account of the New-Discovered Planet [Uranus, by Sir William Herschel, the first planet discovered with a telescope]; Loyalists in America; Review of Experiments on Gunpowder; South Carolina Laws for Confiscating the Property of Loyalists; War - An Ode; etc.
