Traditional Thai statues are commonly placed in front of temples and businesses to provide protection and a warm welcome. Among these, the Yakshas, or Yak, can be found at temples as well as in the departure hall of Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport. Although they may appear intimidating with their large teeth and piercing eyes, these statues are actually considered benevolent beings, dedicated to ensuring that goodness triumphs over evil. Yakshas have served as guardians of temples in Thailand since the 14th century, warding off evil spirits and instilling fear in those who intend to cause harm.
