A nice HL Leonard Model 48-4 fly rod, 7', 3-piece, 2-tip and built for a #4 line. Serial #563 which indicates an approximate manufacture date of 1979. 3.5 ounces. A fine example of a Maxwell period Leonard. Fast DF action. It has seen some use but appears very well cared for. While the grip is soiled and the cap and ring retain only about 50% of their oxidation, the rod shaft varnish and the ferrule oxidation are mint, without so much as a casting crack at the ferrule. The cane temper is blonde and the rod is done in a three up node pattern configuration. The main wraps are honey colored with a maroon and yellow edge at the keeper, male ferrules, and tip tops. Carbide stripper and black snake guides. Wrapped brown at the ferrules. The step ferrule oxidation boasts the hallmark pewter color. The ferrules are tight and the rod is nice and straight. The grip is 5" long and shaped to a slim cigar. The reel seat spacer is a lovely mortised curly maple. The butt cap has "The Rodmaker, Since 1869" stamp. The rod comes with the original bag and the tube is black anodized aluminum with the late model brass hardware.
