We love the storied provenances of books, and this is a gem. Signed distinctly at the base of the title with the autograph of Sir Johnathan Trelawny [1650-1721]. Trelawny was an influential Bishop in the late 17th and early 18th century, having oversight of Bristol, Exeter, and Winchester. An uncompromising Royalist, he was tried for libel and imprisoned in the tower on James II for challenging the Declaration of Indulgence which would grant the Roman Catholic liberty to worship freely and proselytize in England, believing them to be a danger to the Crown. With significant help from Trelawny, Protestant, William of Orange took the throne at the Glorious Revolution of 1688. His faithfulness to Protestantism was rewarded with the above bishoprics and significant leadership in the turn of the century church.

His role in the Glorious Revolution has been preserved by Robert Stephen Hawker in his The Song of the Western Men
