Why melamine for an Italian chopping board

Wood boards crack, stain, and need oiling. Bamboo boards are good but can't go in the dishwasher. Melamine is the material that survives the dishwasher, doesn't warp, doesn't stain, and accepts the hand-decoration that makes the Italian board visually distinctive. For light-duty chopping (cheese, charcuterie, fruit, bread) and serving, melamine is the right material.

For heavy daily chopping (vegetables, meat), use a wood or composite cutting board. The melamine board is the everyday cheese-and-serving board.
