A very unusual work on the market, especially the 1655 edition which adds a further fourth part comprising nearly 300 additional pages, by early Puritan, Richard Capel [1586-1656]. A member of the Westminster Assembly, he was a deeply experiential divine called by Richard Sibbes, "faithful, scholarly, and a dear friend" to the godly. 

The present work on temptation pre-dates John Owen's classic treatise.

Contents include: The Constant Assault, The Enticement of Lust, Of Satan's Temptations, Of Temptations which Come from Ourselves, Of Mixed Temptations in which Satan Joins with Us and We with Him, Rules for Remedies in Temptation, Resistance to Enticing, Help from the Brethren, Watching and Praying, etc., etc.

The Fourt Part has a separate title and additionally address temptations regarding faith, resisting sin, temptations we meet in prayer, temptations involving Scripture, etc.

Original calf boards with probably 19th century or earlier respine, some losses, but solid and attractive. Pastedown absent on inner board, blank ffep chipped. Title in good state with early signature and lightly toned. Some early sepia ink marks to text, though not obnoxious. There appear to be perhaps 17th century and then a few personal, experimental notes by the George Jones noted on the title. P.241,2 small hole in text. Last leaf of text a bit tight to binding.
