Buffalograss is a hardy, warm-season, perennial low-growing grass that is native to North America.  It is widespread mainly west of the Mississippi River from Canada to Central Mexico.  It produces vigorous stolons and exhibits excellent drought and wear tolerance. Because of its drought tolerance, low nutritional requirements and short stature, it is drawing increasing attention for its potential as a low-maintenance turfgrass.   Being a warm-season grass, it grows most actively from April through September and then goes dormant and turns an attractive golden color in late fall through early spring.  It is not tolerant of shady areas.  Sundancer Buffalograss is a new, improved variety that was developed through a cooperative effort with the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.  It exhibits better turf quality over other Buffalograss varieties with faster establishment, dark green color, and better turf density.

New turf: 3 pounds per 1,000 square feet or 130 pounds per acre.

Overseeding existing turf:  1 to 2 pounds per 1,000 square feet or 43 to 86 pounds per acre.

Seed at 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep by covering with soil or mulch .  Keep soil moist to insure germination.

Delay planting until danger of frost has passed.

Warm season grasses such as buffalograss should only be seeded when soil temperatures are consistently above 55 degrees (generally between the months of April and October)  Emergence can be anywhere between 14 and 21 days.  The higher the soil temperature, the quicker the germination as long as there is adequate moisture (irrigation). While Buffalograss is a drought tolerant grass it needs consistent, light watering in order to become established. First mowing approximately 21-28 days after emergence.

Buffalograss turf develops differently than ryegrass or fescue.  Only one seedling per foot is adequate because buffalograss becomes progressively thicker each year as stolons spread.  During the first and second years, attention to weed control may be required.
