About

The Bhayi is a traditional Xhosa blanket shawl which goes over the shoulders and is made with the traditional Xhosa fabric iBayi, which is 100% cotton. It is made in the uMbhaco style, using black shoelace braid, mother-of-pearl buttons and beading, which is done to suit the fabric, but you're welcome to request your own colours.

Please note:

• Traditionally the Bhayi is worn together with a Mnyotho (skirt), Skhwenkweni (bra shawl), Ncebetha (apron) and Faskoti (apron) to complete the full isiXhosa traditional dress called an uMbhaco set. The full uMbhaco set is available to purchase online too.
• Da Gama iBayi fabric is available in the colours white, cream, red, turqoise blue, black, mustard and orange. We can also make this item in royal blue but the fabric is not from Da Gama.

Our crafters are highly experienced African Xhosa seamstresses and beaders who work with a range of fabrics and beading styles to bring you contemporary and traditional ethnic clothing and jewellery, only found in the Eastern Cape, South Africa.
