A Robe à la Française in blue and cream silk damask, dating to around 1770, represents one of the most iconic silhouettes of eighteenth‑century fashion. This antique gown, complete with its matching petticoat, is made from luxurious silk damask woven in alternating shades of blue and cream, decorated with delicate motifs of flowering branches and ribbon patterns. Created in the characteristic French or Sack‑Back style - in contrast to the English “Tight‑Back” construction - the rococo gown opens at the front and features elegantly shaped elbow‑length sleeves trimmed with self‑fabric borders and cream lace.

The bodice fastens with hooks and eyes, while decorative buttons - possibly added at a later date - adorn the exterior. Inside, it is lined with linen and includes an adjustable internal lacing system at the back. A small train extends behind the wearer, and discreet side slits provide access to the hanging pockets traditionally worn beneath such garments.

The skirt, crafted from the same sumptuous fabric, would originally have been worn over panniers (side hoops), creating the wide, dramatic silhouette typical of formal eighteenth‑century dress. Brown linen reinforces the waistband, and parts of the interior are lined with soft pink silk.

The antique rococo dress is almost entirely hand‑stitched, though nineteenth‑century alterations or restorations - likely done by machine - are visible. Three small holes have been carefully backed with matching fabric, making them invisible from the outside.
