Whether your doll is strolling down the red carpet, attending a wedding, or simply at a stylish “do,” this pattern allows your doll the opportunity to be at her most fashionable best.

The “Iris” outfit, by Karen Lorraine Design, consists of an unlined sheath dress finishing at the knee. The dress is then overlaid with a light specialty fabric like tulle or chiffon, which allows the overlay to flow into a gorgeous cascade of light. Lace (or trim) across the top of the bodice highlights the sophistication or casualness of your doll’s event. The back of the dress has a closing of eyelets, while as a bonus, a charming headpiece pattern of handsewn fabric and ribbons complement the outfit.

This pattern offers the seamstress a lot of versatility; for example, the overlay around the base of the dress can be left off and a classy sheath dress remains. Alternatively, there are endless possibilities in how the dressmaker wants to style the overlay fabric at the bottom of the dress. There are some areas that require handsewing, with suggestions given for those seamstresses who prefer not to handsew. These areas are attaching the lace across the shoulders, and attaching the fluffy overlay to the bottom of the dress.

“Iris” is designed to fit 13-14½" dolls like Wellie Wishers™, Hearts for Hearts®, Les Cheries®, and similar sized dolls. The pattern is intended to be used with woven cottons like satin, delustered satin, tulle, lace, and chiffon. Both dresses pictured have an underlay of delustered satin, and different overlays (with the blush overlay being a chiffon fabric, and the rainbow coloured overlay being a tulle fabric). 

Recommended Fabrics:

• Tulle or chiffon (for the overlays) with satin or delustered satin (for the underlays).

Supplies Needed:

• Underlay fabric of 12" (wide) x 9" (deep), woven cotton, non-stretch fabric like delustered satin (which I have used in both outfits) or satin. 
• Overlay fabric of 35" (wide) x 51" (deep), light-weight woven cotton or 2-way (crossgrain/horizontal) stretch fabric like bridal tulle, tulle (shown in the pastel coloured outfit) or chiffon (shown in the blush outfit). 
• Lace trim measuring 13" (wide) by 1½" (deep) for the shoulder straps. You can use lace fabric for this, and trim the fabric down to the necessary width. Alternatively, you can use bridal trims, self-made ruffle trims, embroidery trims, and similar items. 
• 32" ribbon for eyelets (with a width to fit your eyelets like 1/8-3/8") 
• 24" of ribbon at 1/8-1/4" wide for the headpiece
• 20" of ribbon at 1/8" wide for the headpiece
• Scraps of fabric for headpiece, including fabric like satin at 15" by 1" (for three bias cut rectangles of 5" by 1" each for each of the three flowers). 
• Eyelets and eyelet applier. I have used 10 eyelets on the blush outfit and 8 on the rainbow outfit. 
• Matching or contrasting thread.
• Silk thread for the tailor’s tacks with the fishtail dart.
• Fine, sharp pins (if you are using a specialty fabric like chiffon or satin). The ones I use are considered “extra fine, long [pins]”. 
• Hooks and eyes (optional) or buttons and buttonhole-loops. I have used two hooks and two eyes for each dress.
