This dress is a wonderful and early example of Geoffrey Beene's work and to me completely sums up the Beene aesthetic - pieces with a simple cut that had unexpected details and bold use of fabrics that made you catch your breathe. From the front this is a bold and wonderful sleeveless bodice. The graphic curved print has been screened onto a bengaline silk. The bodice is fitted and then the skirt sweeps out and there are literally yards of fabric in that skirt - the fullness when you see it in person is fabulous. The back is a marvel, from that seemingly simple front you turn and see that the back has been left bare with a large circular cut out that dips low and fastens at the nape of the neck. Simple but sensual, perfectly constructed and because of the type of silk used the line and shape remains when worn. A wonderful, statement piece that is in Museum quality. Excellent condition.

The bodice is backed in the same fabric as the exterior and the skirt is lined in a white tissue silk. It closes with hidden set back zipper. There is the slightest of yellowing to the white parts of the fabric under one arm and at the very edge of the neck and some scruffiness along the hem. None of this detracts and I am being very picky. Hooks and snaps to close at the back of the neck
