Exceptional coat-cape by French fashion designer Jeanne Paquin, ca. 1898. Label: Paquin * 3. Rue de la Paix. Jeanne Paquin, also known as Madame Paquin (b. 1869; † 1936) was one of the first female fashion designers. She helped define the fashion scene of her time for over three decades. After training as a dressmaker in the Paris fashion salon of Christoph Drecoll, Jeanne Paquin founded her own fashion house at 3 rue de la Paix in 1891, and her clients included celebrities such as the Queen of Belgium and Wallis Simpson. She was known for luxurious evening gowns in delicate, finely coordinated colors, fur-trimmed suits and coats, and a collection of tango dresses that caused a sensation in 1913. The coat is made of cream thin wool. Color coordinated embroidery in floral motif and openwork add to the elegant appearance. Large pagoda sleeves with two flounces. Incorporated small cape with implied collar. In the hem area three rows of flounces. Interior lined with cream silk. Two inside pockets, one of which is for a stroll umbrella. This is the first time in all these years that we see such an inside pocket for an umbrella. The second, smaller pocket was probably used to carry a handkerchief, smaller items and change. Front closure with hooks and eyes. On the back a braided decorative element with three hanging tassels. Very good to excellent condition. One small stain, on front right side of cape. The decoration is not included.
