Nearly translucent wool gauze - so light the weave is visible through the fabric, skin shadowed beneath.
MD75's knitwear atelier in Carpi, Modena, specializes in extreme processing: enzyme washing, garment dyeing, hand-distressing cycles repeated until the fabric transforms. This turtleneck is spun from very fine Italian wool, then deliberately broken down. The gauze weight makes it almost transparent - you can read a watch face through the fabric when held to light. The result is a crushed, textured surface with intentional pulls and small openings, heathered charcoal with warm brown undertones where the dye settled unevenly.
The turtleneck drapes loosely at the neck, unstructured. The knit is fluid, matte, completely dry to the touch - no sheen, just a light-absorbing charcoal that reads darker in folds. Hip-length with an asymmetric hem, the back falling slightly longer. This level of hand-distressing on Italian-milled wool at this price point exists because MD75 is a knitwear house first - production scale allows craft techniques without the four-figure markup.
Carpi knitwear tradition, enzyme-washed until it forgets what new felt like.
