About the Piece

These rare antique lace appliqués date to the Edwardian era, circa 1905–1915, and were handcrafted in fine cotton needle lace for use on a high-end wedding gown or bridal ensemble. Their distinctive architectural form, inspired by the Eiffel Tower and Parisian cathedral silhouettes, reflects the strong influence of French couture on early 20th-century bridal fashion.

Each motif was created individually and applied by hand to sheer silk, net, or lawn fabric. Rather than being used as continuous trim, these appliqués were carefully positioned as vertical accents along the bodice, train, veil, or overskirt of a bridal gown. When arranged in sequence, they created a column-like effect that elongated the silhouette and added dramatic, sculptural detail to the garment.

Such embellishments were reserved for couture and custom-made dresses, often commissioned as part of a bride’s trousseau and intended to be preserved as family heirlooms. The original foundation fabrics have long since perished, leaving these appliqués as rare surviving examples of Edwardian bridal craftsmanship.

These appliqués were originally sewn by hand onto:
