This exceptional antique dress, dating to circa 1898, is one of only two garments in a long collecting career that can be clearly attributed to Germany. Bearing the Dresden label “Marie Robel”, the dress likely belonged to a German emigrant to America, where it survived the upheavals of two world wars. It was formerly housed in the Museum of the City of New York, adding further provenance to its remarkable journey.

Crafted from celadon (sea green) silk, the gown features a bolero-style bodice edged with lace and pearls, a pleated bust, and long puffed sleeves that end in lace-trimmed cuffs with pearl accents. The high stand-up collar is made of gold silk and pleated lace, echoed by a matching gold-tone silk cummerbund. At the back, large decorative bows add volume and theatrical flair. The skirt falls in the typical silhouette of the late 1890s: relatively straight in front, pleated at the back, and ending in a small train.

Despite discreet underarm stains, minor chest marks, and larger stains on the skirt, the dress remains well preserved. The silk of the collar and cummerbund has become delicate and should be handled with care. Please note: the brooch shown in some images is not included.
