Think twice before throwing out your damaged clothing!

Sustainable fashion sewist, Evelyn Russell, will teach you the benefits of visible mending. This includes instruction on various hand-sewn stitches such as the running stitch, blanket stitch, satin stitch, darning, and sashiko. These techniques guarantee your clothing a longer lifespan and allow you to apply your own creativity to the mending process. No prior hand sewing or mending experience is needed.

This two and a half hour workshop on visible mending will be held on Saturday, July 18th, from 1:00pm - 3:30pm in our sewing area at Community. It is available to ages 18+ with a maximum class size of 10 students.

The instructor, Evelyn Russell, works at Community as a redesigner and seamstress. She is studying Fashion Merchandising and Fabric Design at the University of Georgia and is pursuing a career in sustainable textiles and fashion.

What to expect: Students will be provided a tutorial on hand stitching techniques and how to apply these techniques to mending. Students will have the opportunity to begin applying those techniques to their own personal clothing items during the workshop. Mending takes time, so projects will be completed at home.

What you’ll need: Please bring two or three well-loved garments that are in need of repair.

Embroidery thread, needles, and fabric patches will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own fabric scraps, if you prefer. This class is on hand-sewn mending techniques and sewing machines will not be used.

Cancellations may be made up to 3 days before the class for a 50% refund. Cancellations made within 2 days of the class are non-refundable.
