The Tabriz shaded-medallion tradition, told in navy

In the 1950s and 60s, the Tabriz master ateliers in northwestern Iran refined a technique their predecessors had only sketched: graduated color across the medallion ring, abrash bands deliberately built into the design, and tonal step-downs from outer to inner radius. The visual result is a medallion that recedes into the field rather than sitting flat on top of it. Persian connoisseurs called it tonal depth; Western dealers eventually shortened it to “3D.” This piece is our 1200 Reeds quotation of that grammar, programmed into a contemporary loom — the same effect achieved through computer-controlled color stepping rather than hand abrash.

Why navy is the drama palette in this subcluster

Deep navy holds the deepest recessive value, which means the medallion’s graduated rings push the strongest illusion of distance against this ground. Under warm 2700K incandescent or candlelight, the champagne-gold and ivory accents inside the medallion glow against the navy and the depth effect intensifies. Under cool 4000K LED, the effect flattens slightly — still legible, but less theatrical. This is the cohort’s evening rug: it performs best when the room is lit for atmosphere rather than for work.
