Vintage Kante cloth from the Ashanti Region of Southern Ghana.  Multicolored silk & cotton stripes, woven on small portable looms & sewn into basket weave patterns.  Kante translates into basket - as in the basket weave pattern of this beautiful textile. Once considered only for royal or sacred use, this "cloth of kings" was worn only in times of extreme importance.  Multiple uses as a shawl, poncho or dress and for interiors as a framed textile, pillows, bedspread, table runner & upholstery. The green color in the cloth symbolizes spiritual renewal, growth; the maroon is the color of earth & healing; the yellow - preciousness, wealth, royalty, fertility, beauty; the black signifies intensified spiritual energy; and, the white - purification.
