What an interesting array of folk art picture making techniques there were in the 19th century, sandpaper drawings perhaps the most curious of all. Instantly recognizable, they were made using a combination of charcoal and marble dust, typically applied to a sandpaper-like surface, with the marble dust lending a sort of silvery sparkle. This is a quintessential example, with wonderfully dense, fluttery and silvery foliage framing a river view, a tiny boater at center and sun rising, or setting, over fantasy castle on the horizon. Plus this curtain of pillowy dark clouds overhead. framing the view.
