Hygromycin B is an aminoglycoside produced by Streptomyces hygroscopicus. The antibiotic interferes with the translation step of polypeptide synthesis of prokaryotes and eukaryotes. The antibiotic inhibits peptide chain elongation by preventing elongation-factor EF-2 dependent translocation. Hygromycin B is used as a selective agent in yeasts, bacterial- and plant cells. The antibiotic is inactivated by means of incorporation of the APH 4 gene.
