After a brain injury, my left eye still is affected by light scattering, which has led to a strange new experience with color; intense chromatic aberrations and more perception of light at the ends of the visible light spectrum, causing infrared and ultraviolet rings. These newly intensified colors, more distinctly partitioned from each other, have partitioned my brush strokes into broken brush strokes and adjacent colors. The result is an optical color mixture, in which these divided colors lay in adjacent, small marks of chromatically intense colors, in perceived hues rather than local color. The improbability of these unexpected hues is compensated for in the visual cortex, causing the colors to appear local when viewed from a few feet away from the surface. In addition, my comprehension of atmospheric recession has deepened. Now I see that things not only recede into blue wavelengths of light, but ultimately into ultraviolet vibrations. My paintings are my way of comprehending and explaining my perspective in the medium that I know best, painting.
