This is a classic Great Britain Penny Red, issued between 1854 and 1857 during the reign of Queen Victoria. The stamp shows the iconic left-facing profile of Queen Victoria, engraved by Charles Heath and based on the William Wyon medal portrait. This issue is perforated (unlike earlier imperforate Penny Reds) and carries corner check letters “D–L” for identification. Printed in a distinctive red shade, the stamp was widely used for everyday mail and is canceled here with a barred numeral obliterator. These later Penny Reds marked the transition from imperforate to machine-separated issues, making them a significant piece in British philatelic history.
