I am quite sure this carving dates to the 19th century--I'd guess 1870s or so--and I believe most likely was carved in New England. I love the extreme folkiness of this chief, who I find quite tenderly done, reminding me more of a santos than a "Cigar Store Indian," including for the painted expression on his face. Most of all, though, I love those little feet! Deeply carved and polychromed, with a fantastic warm patina.
11 3/4" t x 3 7/8" w x 2 1/8" d. Very good antique condition, no splits or notable losses, just beautifully softened around the edges with age and wear.
