Curcumin supplements are ubiquitous. And for good reason. Curcumin's effects are so powerful and cover so many critical areas – anti-bacterial, anti-atherosclerotic, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-body-fat storage, antioxidant, anti-thrombotic, anti-erectile dysfunction, and anti-viral – how could you not take it?
Here's the problem: even if you take large amounts of curcumin, most of it is converted into inactive waste, a process called glucuronidation, which is how the body rids itself of things it considers pollutants. Your digestive system struggles to absorb what's left, and only tiny amounts are shuttled off to your body where it can do its magic.
Studies have documented that taking 3.6 grams (about 7 capsules) of ordinary curcumin (with piperine) produces nearly undetectable levels of circulating free-form curcumin.
And it's this ordinary curcumin that's found in almost all curcumin supplemets today.
Biotest chose to go with a lipidized form of curcumin that was invented, tested, and patented by neuroscientists at UCLA, sold as Micellar Curcumin. Take a single dose of Micellar Curcumin and high levels of free curcumin are detected in the bloodstream within one hour. Furthermore, high levels of free curcumin are detected as long as 24 hours later, showing that one daily dose is all you need for round-the-clock protection.
More than 50 studies involving humans have found Micellar Curcumin delivers a host of tangible health benefits, including eye and neural health support, healthy aging, joint health, reproductive health, gut health, and mood and cognitive health.
But what if they could get curcumin to cross the blood-brain barrier and penetrate the deep brain tissues? If they could, then curcumin might act directly on amyloid aggregation, tau phosphorylation, and neuroinflammation. In short, the right form of curcumin could de-age the brain.
The researchers recruited adults who were starting to experience cognitive decline and memory issues. Then they ran a serious test. Double-blind. Placebo-controlled. 18 months long. Brain scans included.
Half the group got a highly bioavailable form of curcumin. The other half got a placebo. The difference wasn't subtle. The curcumin group didn't just feel sharper. They tested sharper. Memory scores improved by 28%. Attention got better. Even mood lifted.
But the real story showed up in the brain scans. They used PET brain imaging to look at amyloid plaques and tau tangles – the biological markers tied to Alzheimer's disease. Those markers declined in key deep-brain regions.
The more absorbable curcumin appeared to cross into the brain and dial down the inflammatory/neurodegeneration process.
It proved that curcumin delivery determines everything. And when you solve that problem, you're no longer talking about a spice. You're talking about a compound with measurable effects on the brain.
And if the right form of curcumin improves brain health, then a more bioavailable form would also make curcumin work better for all the other reasons people take it: joint pain, muscle soreness, depression, gut and cardiovascular health, etc.
The UCLA researchers used 180 mg per day of curcumin, a form small enough to absorb (nanoparticle dispersion). We built on that idea by using 400 mg of solid lipid curcumin particles in Micellar Curcumin.
This lipid encapsulation technology forms micelle structures that survive stomach acid, bypass rapid metabolism, and maximize transport into deep tissues. This delivers 95x higher free-curcumin levels and a longer activity window – not a peak spike that fades rapidly.
This is far superior to piperine-containing formulas. Piperine was a temporary workaround. Micellar technology is the permanent fix.
Western medicine has its problems. One of them is spending more time treating the symptoms rather than figuring out how to prevent the disease. For the middle-aged person, there are plenty of drugs available to treat whatever health issues pop up, but wouldn't it be wiser to prevent those issues in the first place? Here's one supplement that has researchers excited.
A group of researchers found a study on the effects a daily dose of 500 mg. of Micellar Curcumin had on healthy people. The subjects experienced reduced cholesterol and triglycerides, along with more antioxidants in their blood. However, these researchers wanted to dig deeper.
The 19 study subjects, average age of 48, took 80 mg of Micellar Curcumin daily. One month later they noted the following changes:
Put all that together, and it looks like curcumin could act as a preventative for many of the ailments that begin to plague us in middle age. Oh, and as a bonus, the scientists also noted a drop in the levels of an enzyme that makes hair turn gray. So, there's that.
Each new study on curcumin strengthens the idea that nearly everyone should be taking it, whether for increasing athletic ability, warding off depression, or boosting erection quality.
Just be sure to use micellar Micellar Curcumin which contains the lipidized form that produces 95 times more free curcumin in the bloodstream than plain curcumin.
In 2018, UCLA researchers had a theory about curcumin. They already knew two things:
