The Carbon Fiber Veil (#1064) from Fibre Glast is a thin ply of continuous strand fibers that are looped randomly throughout the roll of the material. It is held together with a light binder and is the consistency of tissue paper. IMPORTANT: Carbon fiber veil is not intended for structural use.
Graphite veils are frequently used in applications when corrosion resistant barriers are required. The nonwoven construction allows a resin-rich surface that increases chemical stability and reduces the risk of micro-cracks forming in the composite surface. Carbon veils can also be used for grounding a composite structure, minimizing the build-up of static electricity that could prove dangerous when in contact with explosive liquids and gases.
Carbon fiber veil provides a resin-rich surface barrier to protect composite parts. It minimizes print-through of heavier reinforcement cloth when placed in a mold directly behind the surface coat. The veil permits surface sanding of finished parts without compromising the reinforcing fabric below. It also works well with sandwich cores, where it can be placed directly over the core to optimize bond-line thickness. In sandwich core applications, the veil is also effective at keeping excess resin from draining into cells of honeycomb cores when a vacuum is not being used.
Common applications include providing corrosion resistant barriers in composite structures, minimizing print-through of heavier reinforcing cloths behind surface coats, optimizing bond-line thickness over sandwich cores, and grounding composite structures to minimize static electricity build-up. Carbon Fiber Veil is compatible with polyester, vinyl ester, and epoxy resins.
Place the veil in a mold directly behind the surface coat to minimize the print-through of the heavier reinforcing cloths applied later. When used with sandwich cores, place veil mat directly over the core to optimize bond-line thickness.
