Star fields, and where they come from

While most of the canonical Kashan repertoire is built around the central medallion and the curvilinear floral field, a quieter chapter — the stara or star-field composition — ran alongside it from the late Safavid period forward. Its motif vocabulary came from elsewhere: from the geometric panels framing illuminated manuscripts produced in the same Persian court ateliers, where eight- and twelve-pointed stars enclosed tessellated rosettes and palmettes. Master weavers borrowed the grammar and translated it into a full-field rug composition: stars tessellated across the entire ground, no central medallion, no formal hierarchy. This piece is our 1200 Reeds reading of that translated grammar.

Why graphic geometry works in modern rooms

Unlike the floral and medallion Kashans, the star field has crisp linear edges throughout — the composition is graphic rather than painterly. This makes it the easiest Kashan to live with under modern lighting: cool LED, fluorescent, even mixed office-spec lighting. The stars hold their shape at every color temperature because the drawing is hard-edged. It also makes the rug the easiest Kashan to pair with contemporary furniture — the geometric vocabulary rhymes with modern straight-line forms.

Daily care
Vacuum-friendly under everyday traffic. The dense geometric weave takes regular vacuuming without trouble. Blot fresh spills promptly with a clean cloth; the tight tessellation resists penetration. Professional clean every 24 months. This is not a machine-washable rug.

Designer styling

Transitional living rooms; contemporary spaces that want a classical pattern reference without classical-room commitment; dining rooms with mid-century or modern furniture; foyers with strong sightlines; libraries and offices. Pairs with walnut, oak, blackened steel, brushed brass, leather and wool upholstery in cream, oatmeal, deep blue. The geometric field welcomes modern lighting fixtures (Serge Mouille, PH Artichoke, mid-century pendants).

Best for / skip if

Best for: transitional and contemporary-with-traditional-touches rooms; rooms where the rug needs to work under cool LED; lovers of geometric pattern; high-traffic placements that benefit from a forgiving repeat field.

Skip if: you specifically want a centered medallion as the room’s focal point — the cohort’s canonical medallion-and-corner sibling is the better choice for that.

Geometric star fields photograph as flat repeat patterns and live with much more visual rhythm — the tessellation only animates at standing distance. Our Watt Avenue showroom is set up to walk you around it honestly. Visit the showroom or browse Persian-design rugs.

Reed count and density. “1200 Reeds” (شانه ۱۲۰۰, shaneh 1200) describes warp density across the rug’s width; “tarakom” (تراکم) describes knot density. Our 1200 Reeds line exceeds 3,000,000 knots/m² — well above commodity machine-woven rugs and approaching mid-grade hand-knotted territory in fineness, though still a machine-woven design-language quotation of the traditions it references.
