Early 19th Century English Flintlock Pocket Pistol With Top Mounted Safety Catch Engraved "Calverts" And "Leeds"

A steel and walnut flintlock pocket pistol by Calverts of Leeds.

There were two Calverts who operated in Leeds, John who began in 1797 and continued on and off until 1865 and William who had a much shorter solo career between 1827-1830.  There is also a mention of the two of them working together from 1804-1822.

Their surname is Calvert, so I wonder if when they worked together, did they sign their pieces "Calverts" plural?

The steelwork is clean and smooth with just some minor pin pricking around the top of the lock on the right hand side.

The engraving consists of a single line border and oval cartouches with Stands of Arms behind.  Calverts is engraved on the left side and Leeds on the right.

The trigger guard has a simple starburst design and the body and barrel have Post 1813 Birmingham Proof Marks.

The mainspring is very strong and the action is crisp in both half and full position.

The top mounted safety catch operates as it should whilst in half position.

The bag shaped slab sided walnut grip is in good condition with smooth age worn edges.

The barrel is currently seized on and as is my way I do not try to force them.

A nice English named flintlock pocket pistol.

Barrel length 4cm, Overall length 15.5cm.
