“At the beginning of each campaign, one pushes a door into a dark, unseen room. One can never know what is hiding inside.” – Adolf Hitler, June ’41
Looking back at Operation Barbarossa today, much of the focus is on the campaign to capture Moscow which VentoNuovo studies with Moscow ’41. If people mention Leningrad at all, it is usually the “siege” and the terrible deprivations related to it that takes center stage. But, like Moscow, the best chance to capture Leningrad was before the end of 1941. And the war would have been very different if the Germans had succeeded.
Leningrad ’41 is a war game covering the offensive of Army Group North, to capture the “birthplace” of the U.S.S.R. and the all-out Soviet efforts to defend it. Although using historical Orders of Battle and challenges, players can make their choices to change history!
Leningrad ’41 uses “Headquarters” units and an “Impulse” system to smoothly introduce both “Command and Control” with the limitations that the armies of the day had on just how much moving and fighting they could do. How long each turn lasts depends on player choices, with each player able to decide where and when to make maximum efforts. While the German player is the primary attacker, the Soviet is always looking for a chance for a good counterattack, and can actually win the game early. Variable setup and reinforcements mean no two games are alike.
