Linhof Special #0047 – Built by JW Black (Ex-Fender Custom Shop Master Builder)
Build Date: December 2006
This Linhof Special—Serial #0047—is a rare and exquisitely crafted Tele-style guitar by JW Black, the renowned former Fender Custom Shop Master Builder. With a career defined by precision, feel, and tone, JW Black now builds under his own name for top-tier musicians—most notably Bill Frisell, who tours almost exclusively with custom JW Black Telecasters.
Finished in lightly aged blonde nitrocellulose lacquer, this Linhof blends vintage-correct aesthetics with modern refinements. The pickups are custom-wound by Lindy Fralin:

The reversed plate enhances tonal balance—bringing out more clarity in the bass strings and more warmth in the treble, resulting in a harmonically rich, evenly voiced response.
The guitar has been professionally set up with Callaham steel compensated saddles for improved intonation and snap. Also included are the original brass compensated saddles for players who prefer a slightly warmer tone.
Included is the original Certificate of Authenticity and Mission Statement, which outlines the Linhof’s roots in aerospace and camera design—engineering excellence passed down through JW Black’s family, culminating in a no-compromise instrument meant for serious players.
Please note: Some photos show a 1965 vintage Fender Telecaster that features a JW Black body-only refinish. These images are included for reference only to highlight the consistency and exceptional quality of JW Black’s vintage-correct finishes and aging work.
