This watercolor comes from a collection of landscape by an unknown artist portraying landscapes from the Lake District and Isle of Wright in the UK--popular travel destinations of the era; this was done in 1861. It reminds one that prior to the popularity of picture postcards and personal cameras, making a watercolor would have been the way to document and later share one's travels. This one nicely frames a view of a small tarn near the summit of Nan Bield Pass, a classic Lake District hike; one can imagine that taking a pause to paint this would have offered a welcome respite!

5" x 6 7/8" and in excellent antique condition. One the back is written the title of a different painting, which must have followed this one in a sketchbook.
