The first time he managed to bind Thanatos (Greek personification of Death) with chains, thus stopping the life-death cycle in the mortal world. The resulting deathless battles that were then waged angered Ares (the God of War) who, in turn, freed Thanatos. When Sisyphus finally died, Zeus intervened and made an example out of him... To ensure no one ever finds the feats of Sisyphus inspiring he damns him to a final fate of long and tedious labor. Sisyphus now (and for all eternity) rolls a huge boulder uphill, only to find that it continuously rolls back down once it reaches the top.
