NOW Selenium  is a very easily absorbable form of selenium. It is an element commonly present in food products. It usually occurs in the form of connections with amino acids, e.g. as selenocysteine ​​or selenomethionine, which are its biologically active forms.

Selenium  is a component of oxidoreducing enzymes and cytochrome and thus participates in the metabolic transformations of the cell. Its most important role is related to the presence of glutathione peroxidase in the active center, which is an enzyme responsible for regulating the rate of peroxidation processes in cells and protecting cell membranes against damage by free radicals and peroxides.

Selenium deficiency causes a decrease in peroxidase activity, which results in an increase in the concentration of reactive oxygen species in the body. Oxidative stress then occurs, which has been proven to have a significant impact on the development of various diseases, including: rheumatoid diseases (2), cancers (3) and diseases related to the cardiovascular system, such as atherosclerosis ( 4).

Selenium has a synergistic effect with vitamin E and thus accelerates cell regeneration processes and delays aging processes. It also affects our immunity because it stimulates the production of lymphocytes. It is also a component of an enzyme called thioredoxin reductase, which participates in the recovery of ascorbic acid from its oxidized metabolites.

As a component of the enzyme - deiodinase - it plays an important role in the proper functioning of the thyroid gland, participating in the transformation of thyroxine into triiodothyronine. An important effect of selenium is also to protect the body against poisoning with heavy metals (mercury, cadmium or lead), due to the ability to form inactive complex compounds with them, which are easily removed from the body.

In addition, selenium is very important for men because it contributes to the proper course of spermatogenesis, i.e. the process in which sperm are formed and mature, and thus to some extent affects male fertility.
