BOUND 1 is a striking study in tension, restraint and the quiet poetry of industrial materials. Strapping and cords in metallic golds, copper and bronze wrap tightly around a canvas board, forming a composition that is both minimal and expressive. The layered bindings create a sculptural surface, their sheen shifting with the light like weathered metal along the harbour’s edge.

Inspired by the textures and structures of Sydney Harbour—particularly the Circular Quay precinct—the work reflects the dynamic interplay between wood, metal and stone that defines this historic foreshore. The contrast between old and new, natural and engineered, becomes a visual language of connection, friction and transformation.

As part of a series of four works, BOUND 1 explores the values we place on the built environment and our attempts to contain, shape and control the timeless forces around us. The wrapped cords recall the heavy timber bollards and taut ropes that secure vessels against the pull of tide and engine, symbols of human effort resisting the power of water. The metallic palette elevates these utilitarian fibres, suggesting the cultural and economic weight placed on the structures that hold our cities together.

Both elegant and raw, this piece stands as a contemporary reflection on strength, fragility and the enduring dialogue between human construction and the natural world.
