When bonding sheet materials to expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam, conventional contact adhesives are a liability. They dissolve the foam, destroying the substrate and compromising your work. Styrobond ST eliminates this critical risk. It delivers a high-strength, immediate bond for sheet metals, fibre cement, plywood, and particle board directly to EPS, without any foam degradation.
Why this product exists
Conventional contact adhesives contain solvents that aggressively attack and dissolve expanded polystyrene foam on contact. This makes them unusable for manufacturing insulation panels, caravan components, or any application involving EPS. Styrobond ST was specifically formulated with foam-safe solvents to solve this exact problem, providing robust adhesion without the detrimental effects of standard contact adhesives. It ensures the integrity of the foam while forming a strong, lasting bond.
The numbers that matter
With a spray application coverage of 2.5 m² of bonded area per litre, Styrobond ST maximises efficiency for large panel production. This figure represents the total area for two coated surfaces, offering an economical solution for extensive bonding jobs. Its consistency is optimised for conventional spray equipment, ensuring an even, controlled application. The recommended application and storage temperature range of 10°C to 35°C is critical for consistent bond formation and solvent evaporation, ensuring optimal performance.
What it's like to use
Start by ensuring all surfaces are clean, dry, and free from grease, oil, or dust. For metal substrates, a solvent wipe prepares the surface for maximum bond strength. Apply an even, liberal coat to both surfaces from approximately 20-30 cm away using conventional spray equipment. Allow the adhesive films to dry completely until tack-free – this is crucial, especially when bonding two non-porous surfaces, to prevent trapped solvents from weakening the bond. Once dry, bring the surfaces together and apply firm, even pressure. Mechanical nip-rollers are ideal, applying a minimum of 700 Kg/m². For smaller or more challenging laminates, G-clamps or sash clamps provide the necessary sustained pressure. Clean wet adhesive with Hexane or Xylene, and use Adheseal Hand Wipes for skin.
Where this product excels
- Composite Panel Manufacturing: Securely bond sheet metals, fibre cement, plywood, or particle board to expanded polystyrene cores for pre-fabricated panels used in construction, caravans, and cool rooms.
- Roofing Insulation: Integrate EPS insulation panels onto concrete roofs, particularly those that will be membrane-covered or tiled, providing a stable, foam-safe adhesive layer.
- Specialised Joinery: For any joinery or fabrication involving structural or decorative elements that incorporate expanded polystyrene where foam integrity is paramount.
How it fits in a real system
In roofing refurbishments, particularly for concrete roofs slated for membrane or tile finishes, Styrobond ST functions as a key component in the insulation layer. It is used to securely fix expanded polystyrene insulation panels to the substrate, forming the base of the thermal envelope before subsequent waterproofing membranes or tiling systems are applied. Its foam-safe formulation ensures the longevity and performance of the insulation without chemical degradation.
Choose this when
- When you need to bond materials directly to expanded polystyrene foam without causing foam degradation.
- For bonding sheet metals, fibre cement sheeting, plywood, or particle board to EPS.
- You require a contact adhesive that allows for efficient, even coverage via spray application.
- Working on projects like composite panels, caravan manufacturing, or the installation of EPS insulation in construction.
Don't use this when
- Not for: Application or storage outside the 10°C – 35°C temperature range, which can affect cure and bond strength.
- Not for: Use in low temperatures below 18°C when accompanied by high humidity, as condensation risks a faulty bond.
- Not for: Bonding two non-porous surfaces without ensuring the adhesive films are completely dry, as trapped solvent will compromise the bond.
- Not for: Applications requiring a water-based adhesive; Styrobond ST is a rubber solvent contact adhesive containing hexane.
