These individually handcrafted Bizen-style clay pieces have appeared since the 14th century. Bizen is characterized by significant hardness due to high temperatures during firing; an earthen-like, reddish-brown color; the absence of glaze (although it might contain traces of molten ash resembling glaze); and markings resulting from wood-burning kiln firing. Because of its rustic quality, Bizen has been used popularly in the Japanese tea ceremony. It was designated a “traditional Japanese craft” by the government in 1982.
