Light Gray Medallion Persian Rug · 1200 ReedsAt a Glance A light gray Persian rug with a Mughal court style royal medallion woven on a 1200 reed Turkish power loom, over 3 million knots per square meter on a cotton warp. The royal medallion register is the Mughal Lahore and Agra court adaptation of the Persian medallion: enlarged central rosette, elaborate pendant cartouches, layered floral spandrels, ornate multi band borders. This is the ceremonial statement sibling of the Light Gray cohort

The ceremonial statement — a light-gray field carrying an enlarged Mughal-style royal medallion with pendant cartouches, elaborate floral spandrels, and ornate multi-band borders rendered in ivory, navy, and soft gold.

Heritage & Inspiration

The Mughal court ateliers at Lahore and Agra (16th–18th centuries) adapted the Persian medallion vocabulary into a register suited to imperial halls: larger central rosettes, pendant cartouches extending the medallion along the field's long axis, doubled spandrels in each corner, and multi-band borders elaborate enough to read as architecture from a distance. The Mughal interpretation reads as a declaration of presence rather than an act of decoration. This 1200-reed Turkish translation carries that ceremonial confidence into a contemporary light-gray field; the ivory, navy, and soft-gold detailing traces the Mughal motif vocabulary directly while keeping the palette readable for modern American formal rooms.

Against the other Light Gray cohort siblings: this Royal Medallion is the loudest, most declarative read. The Kashan-formal luxury-traditional sibling is the canonical drawing-room composition; the Tabriz-curvilinear Persian sibling is the garden-of-paradise soft register; the patchwork anchor is the structured Caucasian-Heriz bridge. Choose Royal Medallion when the room wants ceremony.

How It Feels Underfoot

The pile is a 66/34 polypropylene–polyester blend on a premium cotton warp — the cohort's standard construction, with a slightly heavier total weight per square meter at the larger sizes because the medallion's pattern density distributes more yarn material across the field. Bare feet sink slightly; furniture leaves only a temporary impression. The 1200-reed weave is essential for this composition specifically: the Mughal royal medallion's pendant cartouches and elaborate floral spandrels require fine pattern resolution to read as architecture rather than as decorative noise.

  • 3×6 ft (91×200 cm) — entryway runner, narrow hallway (note: Royal Medallion ornament reads compressed at this size)
  • 3×10 ft (91×300 cm) — long hallway, galley kitchen runner
  • 3×13 ft (91×400 cm) — extended hallway, double-island kitchen
  • 5×7.5 ft (150×230 cm) — bedroom anchor under a queen bed, small sitting area (note: ornament reads compressed below 6.5×10)
  • 6.5×10 ft (200×300 cm) — standard living room with front legs of furniture on the rug
  • 8.2×11.5 ft (250×350 cm) — large living or dining room with all furniture on the rug (recommended minimum for Royal Medallion)
  • 10×13 ft (300×400 cm) — open-concept great room, oversized dining (recommended size for full ceremonial read)

Styling rule of thumb: Royal Medallion compositions are designed for scale. The pendant cartouches and layered spandrels need room to extend; sizes below 6.5×10 compress the ornament into visual chaos. Plan to size up rather than down for this register.

Designer Styling Notes

The Royal Medallion reads as imperial Mughal in spirit — it is the rug for the room that wants to declare itself rather than recede. Pair with carved walnut or mahogany casegoods, deep-navy or oxblood velvet upholstery, soft-gold or aged-brass picture frames, and a chandelier with visual presence (multi-tier crystal, aged brass with cut-glass). The ivory and soft-gold detailing pulls through to gilded picture frames and gilt-edged porcelain accents. For a slightly contemporary read on the same ornamental register, layer under a tuxedo sofa in navy linen with brass-bound side tables and a single oversized abstract painting in soft-gold leaf. Avoid pairing with modern-minimalist envelopes (white walls, polished concrete, blackened steel) — the Royal Medallion's ornament demands a corresponding density of detail in the room around it.

Best For

Grand formal living rooms, double-height great rooms, ceremonial entry foyers, and formal dining rooms in homes with traditional millwork (chair rail, picture moulding, wainscoting) and carved-wood casegoods. Especially well-suited to homes with Edwardian, Georgian, or Indo-Persian aesthetic vocabulary.

From Our Sacramento Showroom

The Royal Medallion is the loudest register in the 1200 Reeds Light Gray cohort — the rug for a room that wants to be looked at first. If you'd like to compare it at scale (10×13 or 8.2×11.5) against the Kashan-formal, Tabriz-curvilinear, and patchwork-anchor siblings at our Sacramento showroom, reach out and we'll arrange a side-by-side viewing. We can also commission a hand-knotted Mughal-tradition piece for the most formal commissions. Free shipping across the United States and Canada.

Reading the Spec Sheet: Reed Count & Density

Mughal royal medallion compositions carry the densest motif vocabulary in the Persian-design family — the pendant cartouches and layered spandrels pack more pattern detail per square inch than any other classical medallion register. The 1200-reed weave is the density threshold where that ornament holds legibly at machine-loom production. Below 1200 reeds the Mughal motif compresses into generic floral noise; above 1200 the loom can resolve the pendant cartouches' inner detail clearly.

شانه (shaneh, "reed count") measures yarn points across the loom's width — 1200 shaneh means 1200 vertical warp threads per meter, the finer end of mill-loom production. تراکم (tarakom, "density") measures how tightly the rows pack along the length. Multiplied together they give total points per square meter; for this 1200-reed Turkish weave that lands in the 1.5–3 million points/m² range depending on the mill's counting convention. Higher reed counts hold finer pattern detail; higher density makes a heavier, more durable rug.

One caveat worth knowing: the same shaneh/tarakom numbers aren't always directly comparable across countries, mills, or fiber types. A 1200-reed Turkish power-loom rug is a different object from a 1200-shaneh hand-knotted Iranian piece, even if the spec line reads the same.
