Darling (1965), directed by John Schlesinger, is a sharp British satire on fame, fashion, and moral decay in 1960s London. The film follows Diana Scott (played by Julie Christie), an ambitious, beautiful young model who navigates her way through a series of romantic and professional relationships to climb the social ladder. Initially involved with a television interviewer (Dirk Bogarde), she later becomes the mistress of a wealthy advertising executive and eventually marries an Italian prince. Despite her rise in status and wealth, Diana finds herself emotionally unfulfilled and spiritually lost.
The film critiques the emptiness of celebrity culture and the illusion of success, portraying Diana as both a product and a victim of a shallow, image-obsessed society. Julie Christie won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role, and the film remains a landmark of British New Wave cinema for its stylish direction and biting social commentary.
