A far cry from the gorgeous 18th century penmanship notebooks I recently posted, but still, the art of practicing letters was alive and well in 1929, and Richard Page Thurston was trying hard, though I do notice his penmanship goes somewhat downhill rather than getting better as he progresses through this stack of exercises, joined with a simple brass butterfly clip at top. What I especially like about these is the repetition of a single letter over and over in both capital and lowercase form, such that its nature, as a line drawing and also as an abstract form that stands for a sound, comes into relief. And best of all, the phrase: "Trying never hurt anyone, it is your friend." (And also, good dogs are good friends:))

42 pages, some of them with writing on both sides. Ink is sometimes blue, sometimes black, and definitely done in pen and ink. Overall good condition, with light fold marks and a few edge tears here and there.
