Camp Bonifas served as the gateway to the JSA — a United Nations Command post just 400 meters south of the DMZ's southern boundary. Named in honor of Captain Arthur Bonifas, killed in the 1976 Axe Murder Incident, the camp stood as a symbol of vigilance until its return to the Republic of Korea in 2006.
