This is a classic Great Britain Penny Red stamp, featuring the profile of Queen Victoria facing left, engraved by Charles Heath and based on the iconic design by William Wyon. Issued between 1854 and 1857, this variety was printed by Perkins, Bacon & Co. and is distinguished by its perforation 14 (the earlier imperforate Penny Reds date from 1841–1854). The corner check letters, here “J–I”, served as a security feature to prevent forgery. Printed in shades of red on blued paper, the Penny Red succeeded the famous Penny Black while maintaining the same design. Widely used across Victorian Britain, it remains a cornerstone of 19th-century philately and a must-have for collectors of classic issues.
