• History: Lapis lazuli is one of the oldest gemstones in continuous human use. It has been mined from the same mountains in Afghanistan for over 6,000 years. The Sumerians carved it into seals. The Egyptians used it on King Tutankhamun's funeral mask, using lapis for the pharaoh's eyebrows and eyelashes so he could see into the afterlife. Cleopatra ground it into powder and wore it as eyeshadow. During the Renaissance, lapis was ground into ultramarine, the most expensive paint pigment of the era. It was used by famous artists to paint the robes of the Virgin Mary. Sodalite has a shorter story. It was first recorded in 1811 in Greenland. In 1901, the Princess of Wales received a gift of sodalite and was so amazed by it that she had over 130 tons shipped to England to decorate her home.
