This Hungarian stamp, issued in 1981, carries a face value of 2 forints (Ft) and was designed by József Vertel, one of Hungary’s notable stamp artists. The design creatively depicts a stamp within a stamp, symbolizing the continuity of Danube navigation history. The inner green stamp shows a modern river vessel with the flag of the Danube Commission, while the outer frame illustrates a classic steam paddle-wheel ship from the 19th century — representing the evolution of river transport along the Danube.
The Danube Commission was established after World War II to ensure free navigation on the Danube River, a vital waterway for Central and Eastern Europe. This issue celebrates both the organization’s work and Hungary’s historical role in Danube shipping. The flags and bilingual inscriptions (“Commission du Danube” / “Duna Bizottság”) emphasize its international character.
