Guillermo del Toro's Nightmare Alley is a neo-noir psychological thriller adapted from William Lindsay Gresham's 1946 novel.  The story follows Stanton "Stan" Carlisle (Bradley Cooper), a drifter who, after a dark beginning, joins a travelling carnival and learns the art of deception, hypnosis, and cold reading.  As Stan rises in society to perform psychic acts for the wealthy elite, he becomes entwined with Dr. Lilith Ritter (Cate Blanchett), whose ambitions and manipulations threaten to expose his schemes.  The film is an exploration of ambition, identity, deceit, and the darker side of the American dream, rendered with lush visuals, moral decay, and tragic inevitability.
