BRM 1K or combat reconnaissance vehicle, command, NATO designation, BMP M1976/2, entered service with the Soviet Union in 1973. They were designed as reconnaissance vehicles and command and control vehicles. They carried the standard 73 mm 2A28 Grom low pressure smoothbore gun but with only 20 rounds because their role was reconnaissance, not combat. They were equipped with mine detection gear, radiological detection gear, and chemical weapons detection gear, in keeping with their role of reconnaissance.
