The countdown has begun to the One o'clock Gun. We're three minutes off, and the man in charge is preparing to pull the cord.
The whole affair, from clock to firing mechanism, looks a little bit ramshackle, but it must have worked. The gun has been helping Edinburgh folk to set their watches since 1861, when it was introduced to allow vessels in the Port of Leith to set their maritime chronometers.
