The Saraband village discipline

The Saraband villages south of Hamadan in west-central Iran specialized in a register that the bigger urban workshops mostly ignored: a small central medallion, an allover field of repeating boteh or sub-medallion motifs at a discreet scale, and a deliberately understated border. The Saraband weavers worked for buyers — mostly mid-tier collectors of the late 19th and early 20th century — who wanted Persian formality without urban-court theatricality. This piece is our 1200 Reeds reading of that grammar.

Why this color combination works in real rooms

Gray field with silver medallion creates a tonal dialogue rather than a contrast event. The medallion doesn’t shout for attention; it suggests it. This is a rug that asks the rest of the room to do its share of the work — it won’t carry a thinly-furnished space, but it will quietly elevate a well-considered one. Tolerates both warm and cool lighting because the silver-on-gray relationship is already temperature-neutral.
