This is a crisp, precise, very smart looking antique sewing skills sampler, looking at which feels to me akin to putting on a freshly pressed and starched cotton dress shirt! I come across examples related to this now and then--typically a series of single squares mounted one by one to the pages of a sewing class notebook, each demonstrating one type of stitch or seam or hem--but more rarely do I come across a larger example, polished and resolved and standing beautifully on its own. Detail photos give a good sense of the skills being employed, with each quadrant composed of two pieces of the same cloth, such that I think could be best described as demonstrating four different types of patching--making it complement to a darning sampler, also exemplifying the necessity of knowing how to mend! Monogrammed FL and, I know from the seller, German, later 19th century I believe.
12" x 12" and in excellent condition.
